Video Shows Officer Rescuing Newborn Baby From Plastic Bag

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office is trying to locate the parents of a newborn baby who was found wrapped in a plastic bag in the woods earlier in the month. Officials released body camera footage of an officer pulling the young child, who has been named Baby India, from the plastic bag.

"She's a sweetheart," Deputy Sheriff Terry Roper says on the video. "Oh, look at how precious you are!"

After he pulled the girl out of the bag, he wrapped her in a blanket and she was taken to the hospital for treatment. Authorities say Baby India is doing fine in the care of Georgia Department of Family and Children Services. They released the video hoping to track down her family.

The newborn was discovered by Alan Regatz and his three daughters. When they first heard the cries coming from the woods, Regatz thought it might have been an animal.

"I said, 'That's got to be impossible. It's a baby raccoon, deer or something,'" he told WSB-TV.

His girls didn't agree with him and they went outside and followed the cries until they found the bag discarded by a pile of leaves.

"We went down, pulled it up. There was a poor little baby wrapped in a plastic bag, and we called 911," Ragatz said. "She was alive. She was crying, so we figured that was a good sign. Could have been worse. The credit goes to my girls. They were the ones sticking with it."

Officials thanked the girls for trusting their instincts and searching the woods for the baby in the middle of the night.

"It is, without doubt, divine intervention that this child was found. If it wasn't for these citizens, we would be having a different conversation," Sheriff Ron Freeman said.
